What we know about James Cameron’s new Avatar, ahead of its official theatrical release
James Cameron offered a slightly daunting update on what Avatar: The Way of Water would have to accomplish at the box office to be considered a financial success.
Previous reports have shown that the budget for The Way of Water has jumped $250 million. The long-awaited sequel hits theaters on December 16, and will most likely be released on Disney+ after that.
In a conversation with GQ, writer-director Cameron talked about the money spent on Avatar: The Way of Water.
“Terribly expensive. This film represents the worst deal in the history of film. To be worth it, it would have to be the third or fourth highest grossing film in history. That’s the threshold,” said James Cameron.
However, some predictions claim that Avatar: The Way of Water will earn $475 million in the US and Canada alone by the end of its theatrical run, which is nearly half of the original film’s final total.
Obviously, that’s not exactly good news for everyone who worked on and banked on Avatar: The Way of Water, but at least it skips the amount spent on production.
Avatar: The Way of Water comes a considerable distance from the first film, so generations have changed and technology has advanced enough since then that it’s not news to moviegoers of 2022.
