Kevin Smith defends Marvel and DC and responds after three years to Martin Scorsese: “he’s a man of a certain age”

Martin Scorsese has been lambasted for his criticisms of superhero movies, and director Kevin Smith seems to have his own views on this clash of opinion in the film world, albeit expressed a little late.

Scorsese is best known for gangster films like Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Departed and The Irishman. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has collaborated frequently with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio on Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Aviator, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Despite receiving praise for his films, Scorsese was lambasted in 2019 for his criticism of superhero films after comparing them to amusement park rides, suggesting they would bring no value to the world of film.

Obviously, a few filmmakers spoke out against Scorsese at the time, defending his work in the field.

Although several years have passed since Martin Scorsese’s initial comments, another director has shared his thoughts on the criticism of superhero films.

Kevin Smith suggests that Martin Scorsese might be a little “out of his depth”

In a recent interview with Forbes, Kevin Smith reacted to Martin Scorsese’s criticism of superhero movies. The Clerks III director suggested that Martin Scorsese would be incapable of understanding the new Marvel and DC trend, since he is part of a different generation.

“In our culture, in our very tribal culture, the fact that someone like Martin Scorsese who refers to comic book movies as amusement park adventures and theme park rides, it dissatisfies people who have been doing this for more than a decade. If you risk asking the guy who directed Goodfellas what he thinks of Spider-Man, the answer is obvious. He’s a very good director, and he’s a man of a certain age, but he’s obviously stuck in time. You shouldn’t be surprised that this is his answer,” Kevin Smith said of Martin Scorsese’s 2019 intervention.

Incidentally, Scorsese isn’t the only filmmaker to “hit the ground running” with Marvel and DC movies: Ronald Emmerich seems to agree.
