Nigerian forces rescue girl abducted in Chibok in 2014

The Nigerian Armed Forces have rescued one of the more than 200 girls who were kidnapped in April 2014 by the terrorist group Boko Haram in an assault on a secondary school in the town of Chibok, in the state of Borno (northeast).

“You will recall that some weeks ago we rescued two Chibok girls and their children, I would like to inform you that we have rescued another one in the course of our operations,” one of the commanders of the Armed Forces in the east, Christopher Musa, has stressed, as reported by the Nigerian news portal The Trent.

Operation Hadin Kai troops have confirmed the rescue of Ruth Bitrus, who has escaped from Boko Haram captivity with her son.

Bitrus has indicated that she had escaped from the insurgents’ camp following a bombardment by military troops. She has also explained that the father of her baby was killed by a bomb in the Boko Haram camp.

“We will not rest until Leah Shaibu and other Chibok girls are returned and reunited with their families. We will not rest until they are all returned safe and sound. Ruth Britus has been rescued from Sambisa forest with her child,” Musa emphasized.

A month ago, troops rescued two Chibok girls, Mary Dauda and Hauwa Joseph, after they escaped from the Boko Haram camp in Gazuwa, located about nine kilometers from Bama Local Government Area of Borno, ‘The Sun Nigeria’ has reported.

The two young women each had one-and-a-half-year-old children and, according to authorities, had been forced into marriages with other terrorists after their first husbands were killed in military operations.

Boko Haram abducted more than 270 minors from a secondary school in Chibok in April 2014, although some of them managed to escape. Their abduction generated a wave of condemnation and mobilization at the international level under the slogan #BringBackOurGirls, despite which about one hundred are still being held.
