A 2,000-year-old statue has been brought back to Mexico after being taken in the 1960s. Given the ancient ritual it depicts, it’s good to know it’s back where it belongs. After all, we would hate to anger the ancient beings it depicts.
According to Mario Cordova, an archaeologist, the statue, now known as Earth Monster, was created by the Olmecs civilization. The Olmecs were known for their expert ability to sculpt colossal head sculptures.
The sculpture depicts a huge mountain shaped like the head of a jaguar, with its mouth seen as an entrance to the underworld. This was reportedly an important part of a rite of passage to the Olmecs.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said upon returning home that the ‘ gives us back something that explains where we came from’.
