The Horizon Worlds metaverse will be available in the browser and on game consoles

Horizon Worlds, the social networking site of Meta (ex-Facebook) for virtual reality, will not remain exclusive to the Quest platform for a very long time. Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta’s VR division, recently confirmed that a web version of the network is up and running. Basically, you will be able to enter this “metavers” through a browser, thus being able to interact with other users on other platforms. Horizon Worlds could also come on other platforms, including game consoles.

This announcement comes as a result of a recent controversy with the launch of the ability for users to create and sell content within Horizon Worlds. Meta has announced that each transaction will be charged twice for two types of fees. First, the Meta Quest platform will take 30% of each transaction that takes place through its virtual store, and then another 25% of the remaining amount will be retained by Horizon Worlds.

However, Bosworth says that transactions in the web version of Horizon Worlds will only charge that 25% commission, and the creators can keep the rest of the money. It says that their platform will consequently charge lower fees than the rest of the industry. What Bosworth doesn’t mention is that the Meta Quest store is also Meta’s, and that 30% fee for in-store transactions is also charged by the social networking company. Of course, the items purchased in the web version will be accessible in VR, but it involves extra steps that users must take to ensure that more of the money reaches the developer.

Most likely, if Horizon Worlds reaches other platforms, such as PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo, the commissions will be as high as the Meta Quest store, as those platforms also charge a 30% commission on each transaction.
