Salman Rushdie is taken off ventilator after stabbing during presentation

Aug. 14 () –

The doctors attending the British writer Salman Rushdie, admitted after the brutal knife attack he suffered on Friday during a presentation in New York, have removed the intubation and can now communicate verbally, as confirmed by those close to him, although his prognosis is still pending evolution.

His agent, Andrew Wylie, reportedly confirmed the news to U.S. media, after he indicated that the writer could lose an eye. However, this update has not been made public. Despite this, the president of the Chautauqua Institute, where Rushdie was attacked, has shared the news.

“Salman Rushdie off ventilator and talking! We continue with prayers on behalf of all the members of the Chautauqua Institute,” wrote Michael Hill, president of that institution on his Twitter account.

The man accused of stabbing him, Hadi Matar, pleaded not guilty hours earlier during the day Saturday to charges of attempted murder and assault. An attorney for Hadi Matar, 24, pleaded guilty on his behalf during a formal court hearing in western New York.
