The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dimitro Kuleba, warned on Monday that the discovery of civilians killed in the town of Bucha, on the outskirts of kyiv, is only “the tip of the iceberg”.
“The horrors we have seen in Bucha are just the tip of the iceberg of the crimes perpetrated by the Russian Army,” Kuleba said at a joint press conference with British Foreign Minister Liz Truss from Warsaw.
In addition, Kuleba has assured that “I can tell you without exaggeration, but with great regret, that the situation in Mariúpol is much worse.” In that city besieged by Russian forces, tens of thousands of civilians are trapped and the city is practically destroyed.
“Half measures are no longer enough. I demand the toughest sanctions this week. It is for the victims of rape and murder. If you have doubts about the sanctions, go to Bucha first,” he added in reference to the appointments scheduled for this week in forums such as NATO, the EU or the G-7.
That is why, for Kuleba, the Bucha massacre should mark “a before and after” in Western support for Ukraine. “It should put an end to any kind of hesitation or reluctance about delivering all kinds of necessary weapons (…) to defend our country and free it from the Russian occupation,” he argued.
Thus, Kuleba has expressly requested aircraft, combat tanks, missile launch systems and armored vehicles, in addition to toughening sanctions against Russia. The outcome of the war will be decided not only on the battlefield, but also in the “despatches of Europe and North America.”
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General, Irina Venediktova, has reported that a total of 410 bodies have been recorded in the areas recovered in recent days by the Ukrainian forces in the kyiv region, in which bodies have been seen with their hands tied behind their backs that could be executed civilians.
