Biden approves Alaska flood disaster declaration

U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday approved the state of Alaska’s request for a disaster declaration in response to heavy flooding and landslides that took place from September 15 to 20.

This action makes federal funds available to the state available to affected people in the Bering Strait, Kashunamiut, Lower Kuskokwim and Lower Yukon areas.

Residents who are eligible for assistance will be able to access temporary housing, home repairs or even funds to cover some health-related expenses.

Federal funds will also be available to state and local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by severe storms.
