US Department of Defense announces more than $270 million in security assistance to Ukraine

The United States Department of Defense has announced that it will provide up to 300 million dollars –271 million euros– in security assistance to Ukraine to strengthen its defensive capabilities in the context of the Russian invasion of the country.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby has detailed that this new military aid package includes laser-guided missile systems, armored vehicles, different types of unmanned aerial systems — ‘Switchblade’ and ‘Puma’– vision devices ammunition, machine guns, as well as satellite imaging services and medical supplies.

“This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide new capabilities to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The United States also continues to work with its allies and partners to identify and provide additional capabilities to the Ukrainians,” Kirby said in a statement.

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced two weeks ago a military aid package for Ukraine of 800 million dollars (about 727.7 million euros). This amount was channeled through direct transfers of military equipment by the Ministry of Defense to the Ukrainian Army.

The aid package included the purchase of 800 Stinger anti-aircraft systems, 2,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles, 1,000 light anti-armor weapons and 6,000 AT-4 anti-armor systems. In addition, one hundred unmanned tactical aerial systems, one hundred grenade launchers, 5,000 rifles, one thousand pistols, 400 machine guns and 400 shotguns were allocated.
