Well-known Russian singer Alla Pugacheva asks to be classified as a “foreign agent”.

Well-known Russian singer Alla Pugacheva has asked the Ministry of Justice to designate her as a “foreign agent” in solidarity with her husband, Maxim Galkin, who has been designated as such for criticizing Russian military intervention in Ukraine.

Pugacheva, who until now had kept her distance from political issues, has posted on Instagran a message addressed to her 3.4 million followers in which she calls for his designation and supports Galkin in his call to stop the bleeding of Russian lives for “illusory goals.” The message has more than 298,000 “likes.”

Galkin was classified as a “foreign agent” on Friday, a legal consideration routinely used as a tool against dissent and independent journalists.

Pugacheva is now 73 years old, but she became famous as a pop singer in Russia long before Vladimir Putin became the country’s president.
