HBO has unveiled the extended trailer for House of the Dragon, which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con. The series is a prequel to the masterful Game of Thrones production and will focus on the rise of House Targaryen.
Like its predecessor, House of the Dragon is based on one of author George R.R. Martin’s novels; however, while Game of Thrones encompassed almost the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series, the prequel will instead focus on Fire and Blood.
This is the first of many spin-offs planned for Game of Thrones, and is set hundreds of years before the iconic series, when the peaceful King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) occupies the Iron Throne.
House of the Dragon has revealed new footage from the long-awaited prequel
The new clip is almost identical to the House of the Dragon trailer that was released last week, but with a few notable changes, with some moments being extended.
In turn, Viserys can be heard warning someone (perhaps Rhaenyra) that the Iron Throne is “the most dangerous chair in the realm”. Rhaenyra, who seems poised to take over the lead role in House of the Dragon, comes up with a new line and talks about the overall themes of the series, “Targaryens are closer to gods than humans.”
In Game of Thrones, House Targaryen is made up of two men (not including the eventually revealed Aegon Targaryen, aka Jon Snow). House of the Dragon attempts to show this family at their peak.
Beyond the dragons introduced in the series, you’ll see the Targaryens plot and conspire against each other. There’s apparently a conflict brewing between Viserys and Daemon, but the trailer for the upcoming series puts much more emphasis on the friendship between Rhaenyra and Alicent.
You’ll be able to see House of the Dragon starting August 21, 2022.
