A new species of snake has been discovered in Peru, and is named after Harrison Ford. Ford, who played the iconic character Indiana Jones, had a fear of snakes in the film, and so of course scientists are going to exploit this at every turn.
The new species is referred to as Tachymenoides harrisonfordi. It is a slender reptile that is about 16 inches long. Harrison Ford got wind of this discovery and took notice. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said:
“These scientists keep naming critters after me, but it’s always the ones that scare kids. I don’t understand it. I spend my free time cross-stitching. I sing lullabies to my basil plants, so they won’t fear the night.’ “In all seriousness, this discovery is humbling,” he said. he continued. “It is a reminder that there is still so much to learn about our wild world – and that humans are a tiny part of an impossibly vast biosphere. On this planet, all fates are intertwined, and right now a million species are balancing on the edge of oblivion. We have an existential mandate to repair our broken relationship with nature and protect the places that support life.”
It’s still pretty impressive that even so many years after Indiana Jones originally caused a furor at the box office, scientists still refer to the character when they make a discovery as big as this one.
