The U.S. magazine ‘Newsweek’ has published a report detailing what are the best hospitals in each medical specialty. The magazine has extracted the data from surveys of more than 40,000 healthcare experts (physicians and other healthcare professionals, as well as hospital managers) between June and August of this year, assessing 2,200 public and private centers in 27 countries. The magazine’s report is called ‘World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2023’.
According to the publication, 11 Spanish hospitals rank among the 100 best in the world. in the medical specialties studied. And, specifically, 10 of them belong to the public health system Madrid. The 11th is the ClÃnica Universidad Navarra, which for the third time in a row has become the leading private hospital in Spain. The 10 public centers are La Paz, Gregorio Marañón, ClÃnico San Carlos, 12 de Octubre, Ramón y Cajal, Niño Jesús, La Princesa, Puerta de Hierro (Majadahonda), Fundación Jiménez DÃaz and Infanta Leonor (Vallecas).
In all services
The first two, La Paz and Gregorio Marañón, in the capital, achieve a position in all the clinical services analyzed: Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Digestive System, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Pneumology, Oncology, Pediatrics, as well as Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery, and Urology.
Likewise, in eight of them, Madrid hospitals are the best-ranked Spanish hospitals, occupying first, second and third place in some cases.
Going deeper into each specialty, in Cardiology the ‘Newsweek’ list has selected the 300 best centers at international level, with six public hospitals in Madrid included: La Paz (in 16th place), Gregorio Marañón (26th), ClÃnico San Carlos (80th), Ramón y Cajal (100th), 12 de Octubre (148th) and La Princesa (255th).
150 ranked centers
In the specific field of Cardiac Surgery, out of a total of 150 centers ranked, five are from Madrid: Gregorio Marañón (33), La Paz (49), 12 de Octubre (76) and ClÃnico San Carlos (111) and Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda (114).
In the specialty of Endocrinology, the Community of Madrid manages to place five of its hospitals among the 150 best reputed worldwide: La Paz (33), Gregorio Marañón (41), Ramón y Cajal (84), ClÃnico San Carlos (94) and Infanta Leonor (116).
In the clinical area of the Digestive System, five public hospitals in our region are again on the list of the 125 chosen at international level: Ramón y Cajal (33), 12 de Octubre (89), Gregorio Marañón (91), La Paz (98) and ClÃnico San Carlos (106).
In Neurosurgery, three Madrid public health centers stand out among the 125 selected: 12 de Octubre (40), Gregorio Marañón (45) and La Paz (68). And there are also four that achieve a place among the 125 ranked globally: La Paz (35), Gregorio Marañón (80), ClÃnico San Carlos (85) and Ramón y Cajal (107).

Also standing out in the specialty of Pneumology, out of a list of 125 centers, are Gregorio Marañón (17), 12 de Octubre (32) and La Paz (45), while in Oncology those selected – out of a total of 300 worldwide – are eight: La Paz (23), 12 de Octubre (49), Gregorio Marañón (53), ClÃnico San Carlos (77), Ramón y Cajal (114), Fundación Jiménez DÃaz (251), La Princesa (257) and Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda (280).
In Pediatrics are three public centers of the Community of Madrid are among the 200 best in the world in this specialty: Hospital Infantil Niño Jesús (30), La Paz (53) and Gregorio Marañón (58).
In the medical field of Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery, out of a total of 125 classified, La Paz (21) and Gregorio Marañón (109) figure.
Finally, in Urology, four public centers in Madrid, La Paz (13), 12 de Octubre (26), Gregorio Marañón (29) and Ramón y Cajal (57), are ranked out of a total of 125 hospitals worldwide.
Outstanding position
It is ranked 39th in a list of 300 oncology centers and maintains an outstanding position (86th) among the 250 best hospitals in the world, as reported in a statement in which it emphasizes that, along with Oncology, it appears in seven other specialties analyzed by Newsweek and always as the best Spanish private center.
This first position coincides with that of the best center in the country in Digestive (17th in the world) and Neurology (30th), while the departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (39th in the world) and Urology (60th) are the third among Spanish hospitals.
Cardiology (70), Neurosurgery (119) and Endocrinology and Nutrition (124) also appear in the lists of the best hospitals in the world for their specialty.
Navarra Clinic
For its part, the ClÃnica de Navarra is ranked 39th in a list of 300 oncology centers and maintains a prominent position (86th) among the 250 best hospitals in the world, as reported in a statement in which it emphasizes that, together with Oncology, it appears in seven other specialties analyzed by Newsweek and always as the best Spanish private center.
This first position coincides with that of the best center in the country in Digestive (17th in the world) and Neurology (30th), while the departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (39th in the world) and Urology (60th) are the third among Spanish hospitals.

The “ranking” World’s Best Hospitals has been expanding in each edition the number of hospitals analyzed and now studies 2,200 centers in 27 countries.
The ClÃnica Universidad de Navarra also continues to be the first Spanish private hospital on the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list, a ranking of centers according to the quality and use that their professionals make of the most modern technological equipment, looking at aspects such as telemedicine, digital imaging, the use of artificial intelligence, robotics or information management. In the 2023 ranking, it ranks 135th out of 300.
