The probability of impact of asteroid 2024 YR4 on Earth is now at most 2.8% -.

You are probably familiar with how Earth could be struck by an asteroid in 2032, an asteroid that could cause severe damage and unleash an impact 500 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. You are probably also familiar with how many people are treating this as a catastrophe ending the world, and on that front there is both good and bad news.

The bad news is that the probability of Asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth has now increased to 2.8%, according to the European Space Agency. This means it is now the asteroid most likely to hit humanity since Apophis caused some problems 20 years ago, with a 2.7% chance.

The good news is that this does not mean we will all die in 2032. The ESA has stated that the probability of impact is “changes over time.” and that these “likely to drop to zero” when all is said and done. To quell the fears surrounding this cosmic disaster, the ESA even made a nifty short video that you can see below.

What we do know about the asteroid is the impact corridor, which will essentially sweep the equator. Because of its size, the ESA has also confirmed that it will not have planet-destroying potential, because due to its size, the asteroid could at most be a problem for a single city, as it could have an impact similar to the Tunguska impact in 1908, which, although the largest event in history, still only caused problems for a forest area in Russia and did not even cause a crater when the asteroid exploded 5-10 kilometers above the ground, eventually leading to charred and severely burned forests in the region.
