The Netflix movie is a favorite among moviegoers, and you can give it a shot, too, if you have a subscription to the streaming network.
So the premise of 1967’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is adapted for millennials in this sporadically funny, occasionally over-the-top comedy with multiple culture clashes.
Ezra (Jonah Hill, who co-wrote the film with director Kenya Barris), a Jewish investment banker, meets by chance costume designer Amira (Lauren London) – he mistakes her for his Uber driver. But from this inauspicious encounter, love blossoms.
Soon enough, they meet their parents. Ezra’s mother and father (Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny) are eager to prove their liberal beliefs. When Arnold (Duchovny) eliminates rapper Xzibit’s name from the conversation, it sounds suspiciously like this is the only black person he can think of.
Meanwhile, Amira’s parents, especially her father Akbar (Eddie Murphy), are openly hostile to their daughter’s fiancé. So the slapstick comedy is at home, and so are the clever jokes. All in all, it’s a savoury comedy.
