As usual, they are often represented in the latest ranking of the most innovative companies: the USA, but also German companies secure places in the top 50 (sources: BCG, Sergey Nivens via adobe.stock)
Innovation is the engine of the corporate industry. It’s hard to stop if you stop. The ranking of the most innovative companies worldwide proves that the tech industry in particular lives by this credo.
Each year, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG for short) recognizes the companies that have had a significant impact on their sector. In 2023, 18 tech companies will be among the top 20.
1,000 selected innovation employees were given the task of classifying the companies. No wonder, after all, innovativeness is difficult to measure objectively, especially across different industries. The precise criteria for the list were as follows:
- Company Concentration: The more companies are in one field in an industry, the
constipated
is the sector and the more difficult it is to find its place. BCG consults the Herfindahl-Hirschman Diversity Index. - added value: The total value of dividends received from shareholders.
- Voices per branch: Votes received from employees in the same industry.
- Total votes: The number of votes received from all employees.
This results in this ranking with a total of 50 positions:

USA at the top
The first six places alone are occupied by American companies, four of them from the tech sector. Apple takes pole position for the fourth time in a row. Also represented: Tesla, Amazon, Alphabet (the parent company of Google) and Microsoft.
Overall, 15 of the 20 most innovative companies according to this list are based in the USA.
German company in 10th place
Compared to last year, Siemens moved up a full ten places and moved up to 10th place in the ranking – leaving well-known companies behind.
Large companies that Siemens has overtaken this year include SpaceX, Nvidia, Meta, IBM and Nike, among others.
The following German companies are also among the 50 most innovative companies:
- Biontech
- Bosch
- Mercedes
- BMW
Eight Chinese companies have also placed themselves, making up the bulk of a total of 13 Asian companies. Europe, including Great Britain, is represented eleven times.
Technology, as well as transport and energy, make up the lion’s share of the list. As the chart shows, financial and chemical companies have completely disappeared from the top 50 since 2013. The health sector has grown in the wake of the global pandemic.
The tech, energy and transportation sectors top the list of the most innovative companies in the world. Did you expect so many American companies in the list? Are you surprised that Germany is represented five times? Do you miss a company among the top 50? Please leave your opinion in the comments.
