Samsung prepares Galaxy M54, a new mid-range with large battery for 2023

The successor to the already launched M53, the Galaxy M54 could come not only with a bigger battery, but also a much more powerful chipset.

The phone is expected early next year exclusively in a 5G version, powered by the new Snapdragon 888 chipset, first seen on flagship phones from the 2020 “crop”.

Appearing as a significant upgrade to the Galaxy M series, the new M54 would also receive a Super MAOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate, displaying images at FHD+ resolution on a 6.67-inch diagonal.

Returning to the Snapdragon 888 chipset, the replacement for the current model’s Dimensity 900, Qualcomm’s solution is pushing much more competitive performance and features expected until recently only in the flagship range, touching on aspects such as photo resolution and image processing, charging speed and connectivity options.

Recommended by its competitive price/performance ratio, the Galaxy M54 thus moves further away from the label of a compromise solution, chosen solely for the benefit of the extra battery life promised by an oversized battery. However, the latter aspect is not neglected either, with the new M54 coming with a 6000mAh solution that should at least compensate for the increased performance hardware configuration.

According to the preliminary specs list, the Galaxy M54 will come in base trim with SD888 + 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The photo setup is centered around the 64MP main camera and 32MP front camera, seconded by ultrawide and macro cameras of 12MP and 5MP respectively. It remains to be seen if Samsung has included the optical image stabilization feature, a feature previously absent from the Galaxy M series. At least the 4K shooting option comes “free” from the SD888 chipset, so there’s no reason to omit this feature.

Returning to the anticipated 6000mAh capacity battery, this could be an optimized solution for maximizing density with a single Li-Ion cell. So the speed at “fast” charge will probably not exceed 25W. Even then, only in combination with a separately procured AC adapter.

The list of features would be completed with integrated fingerprint reader under the screen, 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and USB-C.
