Russia calls US accusations of Navalni poisoning unfounded

The Russian embassy in the United States has stated that the U.S. State Department’s accusations about the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalni are groundless.

“We draw attention to another round of State Department accusations related to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Russian special services against Navalni,” the embassy has announced on its Telegram account.

“Statements about the poisoning of the ‘blogger’ are absolutely groundless. The criminal case against him is not politically motivated. He is serving his sentence on the basis of a court decision issued in accordance with Russian legislation,” the message from the Russian representative on U.S. territory continues.

Also, the diplomatic office has described as false the statements of the US Foreign Ministry referring to a possible possession of chemical weapons in Russian hands.

“Washington is well aware that in 2017 our country completely eliminated the national arsenal of chemical warfare agents,” it has reiterated, stressing that this fact has been confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

In this regard, Moscow has recalled that the US has not followed this line of action regarding chemical weapons. “In turn, the United States is the only country that has not yet disposed of its chemical arsenal. We urge Washington to stop evading its international legal obligations and also not to interfere in Russia’s internal affairs,” the diplomatic office has remonstrated.
