The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that more than a thousand Ukrainian marines had surrendered in the town of Mariupol.

“In the city of Mariupol (…) as a result of the successful offensive actions of the Russian Armed Forces and police units of the Donetsk People’s Republic, 1,026 Ukrainian servicemen (…) have voluntarily laid down their arms and surrendered,” said the ministry’s spokesman, Igor Konashenkov, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.
