After the Christmas holidays, the news and novelties in the industry start to arrive with assiduity. And it’s time to talk about the entire League of Legends competitive landscape for 2024. Let’s get to it.
Global Changes
Improving everything related to competitions is one of the goals Riot is going to focus on for their international events. In 2023, they made format changes in both MSI and Worlds that eliminated matches that did not contribute to the outcome of the tournament. By 2024, want to continue to increase the stakes around MSI and want to create a stronger connection between MSI and Worlds.
This season, the following will be established a base of 3 global seats for LEC, LCS, LCK and LPL. PCS and VCS will each retain two World Cup slots, and LLA and CBLOL will each retain one World Cup slot. With these changes, new ways will be introduced for teams and regions to demonstrate their strength and earn additional World Cup slots through their performance at MSI.
For the first time, the winning MSI team will receive a guaranteed place at the World Cup.which also counts as an additional slot for their region. The next best performing region in MSI will secure an additional slot for their region. To ensure that the team that qualifies early for the World Cup remains committed to success in their local league, they must qualify for their region’s summer playoffs.
To use the MSI 2023 results as an example, JDG would automatically qualify for the World Cup, which would allow a total of 4 LPL teams to qualify for the World Cup. And the next best performing region, the LCK in the case of MSI 2023, would secure an additional World Cup 23 spot, for a total of 4.
Riot Games is hopeful that these adjustments will raise the stakes and draw a meaningful line between the two highlights of the LoL Esports season – MSI and Worlds.
