Netflix ‘takes the bull by the horns’ and makes its own game studio: what we know, so far, about it

Netflix seems to be tending to stop relying on third-party sources when talking about gaming content in its dedicated section and is “taking the bull by the horns” at last.

So, according to a new report, it looks like Netflix will soon be consolidating its own game catalog. The streaming giant is set to set up an in-house games studio in Helsinki, Finland. It aims to create “world-class” state-of-the-art games that will then be streamed without ads or in-app purchases.

While it’s too early for details on game titles, per se, we do know that Zyng, as well as EA alum Marko Lastikka, will be at the helm of this new concept that just might work.

Why Helsinki – Netflix seems to have a motive

Incidentally, Helsinki is a city that fits the context well, serving as “home” to some of the “greatest gaming talent” on the planet, according to Netflix.

Mobile developer The Walking Dead Next Games (which Netflix bought in March) may be mentioned here. It should be noted that the streaming network has acquired several developers of late, including Boss Fight and creator Oxenfree’s Night School Studio, but hasn’t created a developer from scratch so far – even so, it looks like it’s not wasting any time.

There’s bad news, though: you won’t be able to see the first fruits of this in-house studio for “years,” Netflix points out.

That, and recent acquisitions, put a spotlight on how the company’s gaming strategy is evolving. Whereas Netflix initially depended on outsider games, including slightly tweaked versions of existing titles, it’s now increasingly focused on truly unique projects you won’t find elsewhere.

In theory, there’s a strong possibility that even more people will subscribe to Netflix in the future, given its increasingly thick library of games.
