Metaverse: Meta Horizon Worlds application still too buggy to use, say company executives

In a recent memo, Shah explains that even Meta employees don’t use the app that much, and alludes to setting time quotas for employee presence on the platform.

Horizon Worlds Buggy, Meta executive acknowledges.

Meta executives are now criticizing Horizon Worlds and the state of the platform’s flagship metaverse app. According to The Verge Meta’s vice president of metavers, Vishal Shah, referred to the quality issues the platform is facing.

The executive acknowledged the poor state of Horizon Worlds currently, and proposed addressing the bugs in a “quality lock phase” which would extend through the end of the current year. Shah explained that the objective of this measure would be to “Ensure that we fix our quality deficiencies and performance issues before opening Horizon to more users..”

Horizon Worlds is the app designed to appeal to users who currently purchase Meta Quest branded VR headsets, which at the time of writing are the only way to experience these worlds. The company hinted at the launch of the platform for web-based environments, but did not provide more information about it.

Lack of employee love

For Mark Zuckerberg, the idea of the metaverse and the importance it will have in the future are critical to the company’s growth. In July, Meta said it lost $2.8 billion due to the poor performance of its metaverse division, Reality Labs. Shah also thinks this concept is strong and matters. In the memo, he states:

Since launching late last year, we’ve found that Horizon Worlds’ central thesis – a synchronous social network where creators can build engaging worlds – is strong.

However, company employees were actively avoiding spending time on the platform as of the writing of this memo on September 15. A follow-up memo sent on September 30 confirmed that the situation was still present, with Shah referring to the establishment of quotas for employee access to Horizon Worlds.

Shah tried to woo employees, stating:

Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds. You can’t do it without using it. Get out there. Set up times to do it with your colleagues or friends.
