Today we are going to talk about the title that appeared in Japan in 2008 for the Nintendo Wii. The game PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse has never appeared in the West, so it is now making its appearance in 2023. We got to check out the game extensively for the Xbox Series X and below you can read our findings of the game!
The game’s story takes place on the fictional Rogetsu Island in 1970 where a series of terrible incidents have occurred. There has been a serial killer who has kidnapped as many as five girls but fortunately they have escaped. After a while the island is attacked in a mysterious way and everyone is killed including two of the girls who were kidnapped at the time. Now the survivors and a detective who has been after this kidnapping for years decide to investigate. It is up to you as the main character to figure out the mystery behind Rogetsu Island and see what is going on with that strange mask.
When you start the game you soon know that it is about a survival horror game because you start in a big house where it is then really haunted. You get a camera as a weapon and different kinds of films. You go onto the Island and start trying to unravel the mysteries and uncover the truth.
What I said earlier you have the camera with you as a weapon. Some ghosts are easy to defeat by simply keeping shooting them but some are also much more difficult and unfortunately the lumbering gameplay doesn’t really help this run flexibly. You can also take care of a Fatal Frame which means that you have to wait exactly until the right moment to take a picture and be able to reduce the life bar of a ghost very large.
The story of the game is quite interesting only the gameplay is what I said before a bit wooden that makes everything go fairly slow. This may be due to the fact that the game is a remaster of the 2008 Nintendo Wii version. In the Nintendo Wii version you controlled the flashlight with one of the Wii Motes. Now you do this control with your right stick of the controller. This is all quite slow unfortunately which takes the speed out of the game.
The walking of the characters is also very slow. You can walk faster by pressing one of the triggers but this is still slow as shit. Also opening doors and picking up various objects is also very slow.
The game is what I said earlier a remaster of the Nintendo Wii game released in 2008 and you can see that on graphical aspect because the game does not look good. The movies are nice but the gameplay scenes are almost unchanged.
Conclusion
If you are looking for a good survival horror game then you had better leave PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. The game cannot keep up in this day and age in terms of gameplay. The story is exciting but not a high-flyer either. I have always been a fan of the Japanese games but this game is unfortunately a lesser one for me. The title might be fun to pick up from the budget bin but not for the full whack.
