Marc Márquez suffers a new episode of diplopia

MADRID, March 22. (Royals Blue) –

The Spanish MotoGP rider Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) suffers a new episode of diplopia, that is, double vision, after his chilling fall during Sunday’s ‘warm up’ at the Indonesian Grand Prix, which prevented him from participating in the race, and will have to be evaluated next week to know when he will be able to return to the competition.

“The Repsol Honda Team rider has been diagnosed with another episode of diplopia as a result of the heavy fall he suffered last Sunday during the ‘warm up’ of the Indonesian Grand Prix,” reported his team, Repsol Honda, on Tuesday.

During the warm-up laps prior to the race at the Mandalika International Circuit, the rider from Cervera suffered a brutal ‘highside’ with his motorcycle and jumped into the air before hitting the ground at turn 7. He was able to get up on his own feet, but he suffered a concussion and several polytraumatisms that forced him to be transferred to the hospital in Mataram, the capital of the island of Lombok.

There, he underwent a more exhaustive medical examination and a CAT scan in which serious injuries were ruled out. However, as a precaution and jointly, the MotoGP medical team and Repsol Honda decided that it was better for the Catalan rider not to participate in the race.

It was on the trip back to Spain when Márquez “began to have discomfort in his vision.” For this reason, upon arriving in Barcelona on Monday, he visited “urgently” at the Hospital Clínic his trusted ophthalmologist, Dr. Bernat Sánchez Dalmau, who after his examination confirmed “a relapse in the diplopia that the pilot suffered last November “.

This same Tuesday, the Catalan visited his medical team led by Dr. Samuel Antuña at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid. “They have given him a general medical check-up to evaluate all the contusions caused by the fall and a brain MRI that has reconfirmed that he does not suffer any other injuries,” the team continued.

Dr. Sánchez Dalmau explained that Márquez is suffering “a new episode of diplopia caused by a recurrence of paralysis of the fourth right nerve, with less damage than that which occurred in the injury in November 2021.”

“After this exploration, it was initially decided to follow a conservative treatment with periodic medical tests. Next week, Marc Márquez will undergo a new check-up to evaluate the evolution of the injury and to be able to predict the estimated recovery period to return to the competition,” he said.

MÁRQUEZ: “IT IS LESS SERIOUS THAN LAST YEAR’S INJURY”

After confirming the injury, Márquez spoke about this new mishap. “It seems that I am experiencing déjà vu… During the trip back to Spain, I began to experience discomfort in my vision and we decided to visit Dr. Sánchez Dalmau, who confirmed that I have a new episode of diplopia,” he said.

“Fortunately, it’s less serious than the injury I had at the end of last year. But now it’s time to rest and wait to see how the injury evolves. As always, thank you all for your support!” he concluded.
