John McAfee is alive and hiding in Texas, according to his ex-girlfriend in a Netflix documentary

Director Charlie Russell said Samantha Herrera probably doesn’t know if her statement is valid, and McAfee’s widow Janice said she wishes it were true, but that if McAfee were alive, he wouldn’t be hiding in Texas.

McAfee’s ex-girlfriend claims that John paid people to pretend he was dead.

On Wednesday evening, August 24, Netflix will air a new documentary about John McAfee called “Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee“, and one of McAfee’s ex-girlfriends makes a pretty bold statement, according to people who have already watched the documentary. On Monday, the New York Post explained that McAfee’s Belizean ex-girlfriend, Samantha Herrera, said McAfee called her after his alleged suicide.

I don’t know if I should say this, but two weeks ago, after he died, I got a call from Texas: ‘It’s me, John. I paid people to pretend I’m dead, but I’m not“, Samantha Herrera was quoted as saying in the new Netflix documentary. She also added that McAfee said, “There are only three people in this world who know that I am still alive.“However, Alex Mitchell of the New York Post attempted to contact Herrera and got no response. In addition, the film’s director, Charlie Russell, spoke about Herrera’s claim in a conference interview with Esquire.

The Esquire interview is entitled “What if he’s still around?” and reporter Laura Martin interviews Bafta-winning filmmaker Charlie Russell about Herrera’s claim. “I don’t know what I think and I don’t think she does“, Russell replies. “She says it, and then she looks at the camera, and I can’t figure out if she thinks it’s real or not. She’s someone who was very angry with John. He promised them a life together and I think they were genuinely in love, despite the huge age difference.

The award-winning filmmaker added:

I think he offered her a really different future and then he literally abandoned her at the border and I think that’s very painful for her and it took her years to get over it.

McAfee’s widow says the speculation is probably not true, and that if it were ‘he wouldn’t be hiding in Texas‘.

Despite the speculation, McAfee’s widow, Janice McAfee, does not believe her husband is alive, and if he were, he would not be hiding in Texas. “Oh, how I wish that were true“, Janice tweeted, sharing the New York Post article. “If John were alive, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be hiding in Texas“. Janice also noted that she highly doubts that John chose to hide in the United States. Janice McAfee stated on Tuesday:

Texas is great, for sure, but John was being held in a Spanish prison because of false IRS charges against him, so I doubt he chose to hide in America. That would be stupid.

Samantha Herrera’s claim follows reports that McAfee was still in a Spanish morgue more than a year after his alleged suicide. Janice McAfee and her legal team fought to get an independent, third-party autopsy for McAfee. The fact that the Spanish High Court blocked a third-party autopsy is why John McAfee’s body remained in the morgue for so long.
