Foamstars Review (PS5) – That’s Gaming

When Foamstars was announced by Square Enix, everyone looked a bit surprised. Foamstars resembled the Playstation version of Splatoon. However, there was a big difference, because you do not shoot with paint, but with foam! So if you’ve always dreamed of spraying each other all wet with foam, then Foamstars might be for you. Nevertheless, we got to work on Foamstars to find out for you whether Foamstars can stand out in a gaming world where there is a hard fight to connect you as a player to a game.

Playstation has been looking for a good Live Service game for ages and that is Foamstars. You can buy Foamstars, but you also get it for free this month with Playstation Plus Essential. For many of us, then, this game will be “free.” Foamstars simply feels different from any other live service game on the market. It is not a fierce shooter like Call of Duty, not a tactical game like Diablo IV, nor is it too childish like Roblox. Foamstars lets you play four-on-four online in a number of different modes. Most people will find you in Smash The Star. In these modes, you have to beat your opponent, and if you beat enough opponents, their star player will come onto the playing field much stronger. The goal is to eventually defeat those as well to win the game. However, it’s not just shooting foam to make your opponents foam away. When their Health is gone, you also have to give a slide kick to really send them back and take a point away from them. Sliding is a nice mechanic. When there is enough foam from your own team on the playing field, then you can easily move yourself around the playing field, which in turn gives you an advantage over your opponents.

The other modes are Happy Bath Survival and Rubber Duck Party. In Bath Survival, each team is split into two groups, one in the middle of the arena and the other on the outside. The goal is to kick the other team out of the arena and keep yourself in the arena. It is incredibly interesting, and especially fun to just play through these modes once. In Rubber Duck Party it’s all about controlling the duck, it’s a little Hardpoint of Call of Duty. When you have control of the Duck, you can steer the Duck toward the opponent’s goal. By dancing on the Duck’s head, di also goes faster!

One disadvantage is that when there is a lot of foam on the map, you can’t see anything well anymore. Everything is so cluttered that sometimes you don’t know how to get to your opponent. This sometimes causes so much chaos that you ask yourself, how much fun is it?

In addition to multiplayer, there are also missions you can do on your own, the single player portion of the game. Foamstars has a number of characters all with their own story which is revealed in these solo missions. Additionally, this is actually also the mode where you really learn how the game works and how the characters work, so you can really be well prepared to enter the foam field. All the characters feel different, so it can definitely help to play these missions, although sometimes it can feel a bit like a grind because you’d rather play online.

Foamstars is another one of those games where you want to show how connected you are to a character. And of course you don’t want to look like the basic character, you want to show that you have a great outfit. Now that the game is “free” via PS Plus Essential, the in game purchases don’t feel so bad, but for people who don’t have Essential, the game is just 30 euros, with an awful lot of in game purchases and a season pass. The season pass has nice items to unlock, especially the outfits for the characters. Still, the in game store is otherwise very expensive, certain sets just cost 11 euros already, which is really a lot of money for a live service game.

So what do we find in the completeness of Foamstars? Surprisingly enough, Foamstars is just plain fun. Foamstars looks cheerful, plays well and, above all, is a pleasure to play. The solo missions sometimes feel like a grind, sometimes the map can get cluttered and sometimes you also get thrown into a game with people much better than you and yet the game remains fun. However, the game is quite expensive with the ingame purchases, with a price tag of 30 euros and ingame items sometimes costing as much as 11 euros or more, which is simply too much. Still, I would recommend everyone to try out Foamstars and let’s please try to keep this game alive, because this game definitely has potential in the long run.
