Cristina Fernandez accuses prosecution of violating the Constitution in her corruption trial in Argentina

Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has accused prosecutors Diego Luciani and Sergio Mola of violating the National Constitution for basing their accusation on “decrees approved in Parliament” and has demanded that they be disqualified for life, in her defense plea in the trial in which she appears as a defendant.

In an intervention of more than an hour, the former president has assured that the cause in which her participation in an illegal plot to defraud the State through the concession of public works in Santa Cruz is investigated is a “fable” mounted to take her “by the hair” to testify.

Fernandez de Kirchner has argued that the policies questioned are the product of “three governments elected by the people”, so it is an “unconstitutional, anti-republican and anti-federal” accusation, as reported by Télam.

“People elect governments, the three governments, the one Néstor Kirchner headed and the ones I headed were elected by the people. We cannot be an illicit association”, insisted the former president.

In this sense, she pointed out that, if the accusation is successful, it could be interpreted that all the acts that were the product of this “illicit association” -that is, the government- would be “illegitimate”, so that the two prosecutors could not be in the case because she herself signed that they obtained such position.

The members of the Public Prosecutor’s Office pointed out, requested a 12-year prison sentence for the vice-president, as well as her perpetual disqualification for considering her responsible for defrauding 5,231 million pesos (more than 39 million euros).

The vice-president has also made reference to the assassination attempt, regarding which she has pointed out that the people arrested “are not the intellectual authors” and has assured to feel helpless “with this Judiciary”. She also highlighted the relationship that exists between the lawyers of the detainees and the senator of Juntos por el Cambio (Together for Change), of the opposition.
