BRUSSELS, Jan. 28 (Royals Blue) –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, pointed out this Friday that after the written response of NATO and the United States to Russia on security issues in Europe, it is “the moment for diplomacy” to avoid a war in Ukraine.
“Right now we are investing all our capabilities in diplomatic contacts. It is time for diplomacy, to seek through dialogue how to avoid a military conflict,” explained the head of community diplomacy in statements during a visit to Kenya.
In this sense, he has assured that despite spending four days on tour in Africa, he maintains many contacts to follow the evolution of the crisis in Ukraine, of which he has said that Europe “hopes for the best, but is prepared for the worst”.
The next few days will be full of telephone calls, videoconferences and meetings with the different actors in this crisis, European diplomatic sources have pointed out, regarding Borrell’s agenda.
TRIP TO WASHINGTON ON FEBRUARY 6
The High Representative is in Kenya and will then travel to Mozambique. However, he plans to travel to the United States from February 6 to 8, where he will meet with the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in one more step in the joint choreography of Brussels and Washington in the face of the pulse of Russia due to the crisis of security in Ukraine.
In parallel, the Twenty-Seven is finalizing work on a sanctions package in response to Russian aggression. The EU has warned that the measures will be forceful and coordinated with the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, with the ability to short-circuit the Russian economy.
Tensions around Ukraine have worsened in recent weeks due to the increase in Russian troops deployed in the area, an issue that the international community sees as a threat of invasion. The Russian government, however, has rejected such accusations.
