Bahamas corrections commissioner says FTX co-founder Bankman-Fried in ‘good spirits’ at prison infirmary

According to local reports, former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) is in “good spirits” and is being kept in the maximum security unit of the infirmary. SBF is being held at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS), in a prison called Fox Hill known to be the most dangerous in the Caribbean. Acting Commissioner of the Bahamas Correctional Services, Doan Cleare, said SBF is in a dormitory-style cell with about five other inmates.

After living in luxury at Albany Place in Nassau, Bahamas, FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) is now in the maximum security unit of the Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDOCS). The prison does not have a great reputation and according to a New York Post article report the prison is “infested with maggots” and constitutes a “hell” penitentiary. The Post also states that SBF’s family members tried to get vegetarian meals for the former FTX executive.

BDOCS is called the Fox Hill Prison and it is also known for being overcrowded. There are numerous human rights reports littering the web about alleged abuse problems at the prison. Journalist Tiffany Fong tweeted at that the U.S. State Department reported that the Fox Hill prison was “infested with rats, maggots and insects” and that “prisoners disposed of human waste with buckets” and “developed bedsores from lying on the bare floor“. Other reports reveal that Fox Hill is understaffed and that some inmates are “allowed out for only 30 minutes a week“.

Acting Bahamas Commissioner of Corrections Doan Cleare said thenassauguardian.com that SBF is in the Fox Hill medical ward. Cleare also revealed that after spending his first night in jail, the former FTX executive was “good mood“. “Mr. Fried is housed in the Maximum Security Housing Unit in the infirmary“, the commissioner told the reporter.

He receives his medication on time“, added the Commissioner of the Bahamas Correctional Service. “Only in-person visits by counsel are permitted at this time, as well as U.S. Embassy personnel. All other visits will be via video conference. He is with five other detainees in a dormitory-type environment.“SBF will be held at Fox Hill until February 8, 2023, if he is not extradited to the United States first.
