Blinken visits Moldova amid Ukraine crisis

MADRID, March 7. (Royals Blue) –

The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, visited the Modal capital, Chisinau, on Sunday, where he met with the country’s president, Maia Sandu, the prime minister, Natalia Gavrilita, and the minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicu Popescu to address the situation in Eastern Europe.

“As I leave Chisinau, I am inspired and optimistic about the progress Moldova has made in its 30 years of independence, such as economic growth, fighting corruption and helping those seeking safety from the Kremlin’s unjustified war on Ukraine,” Blinken said on his Twitter profile.

Blinken has shown his solidarity with the president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, while the country faces an influx of refugees due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has stressed that it is a “significant effort for a country with a population that is below of 3 million and with quite humble income”.

For his part, Sandu has published on his account of the same social network that has received Blinken: “We talked about our continued efforts to receive and help refugees and the ways in which the US can support refugees to free the pressure on our economic and social systems.

Thus, the president of Moldova has emphasized that “they are with those who seek protection from the war in Ukraine, but they need more support from their partners.”

Moldova is militarily neutral, does not aspire to join NATO and last week applied for the country’s accession to the European Union.

The Secretary of State of the United States undertook a trip to Europe on March 3 to meet with several leaders of European nations in order to address the situation in the east of the continent and coordinate a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
