Dacia will launch a new electric vehicle that will replace Dacia Spring in 2024. Although the electric model was launched only in 2021.
The announcement was made at the Renault Group’s annual press conference. It is already quite clear that the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance – and thus the budget brand Dacia, which belongs to Renault – is accelerating its electrical projects. But for Dacia in particular, the plans were a challenge to keep the brand in the regular price segment.
De Meo has not yet given a name to the new Dacia model, referring to it only as the “successor to Spring”. According to the Renault chief, the vehicle will be based on the CMF-A platform, which is exactly the platform on which Renault Kwid, Renault City-K-ZE and Dacia Spring are already based.
Various press reports indicate that de Meo was probably referring to CMF-AEV – the all-electric successor platform to CMF-A. The new R4, also the successor to the Nissan Micra, will be based on the so-called CMF-BEV, a B-segment electric platform.
Dacia draws the new project
Designer Yohann Ori, head of the design department, told Profit.ro that the team he leads is already working on a new electric model.
“We started working on it, but you know that any car needs five years to reach the public,” Yohann Ori told the source.
“Yes, Dacia will present a new concept that you will like,” said the head of the design department.
De Meo did not provide details on why Spring is canceled after only three years. The Renault boss said only that the decision was made “this year”. Obviously, the focus is on costs and technology – the EuroNCAP impact test with only one in five possible stars was devastating, plus the high transport costs could have affected the already tight margin for small cars. Although there have been many orders for Spring in Europe, there have been numerous reports of quality deficiencies.
