Contained an arson attack on the cathedral housing the ashes of Archbishop Desmond Tutu

MADRID, Feb. 6 (Royals Blue) –

South African firefighters have contained an arson attack that began this past morning at St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, the place where the ashes of the archbishop, Nobel Peace Prize winner and anti-Apartheid icon Desmond Tutu rest.

The dean of the cathedral, Michael Weeder, has confirmed to the News24 news portal that everything indicates that it is a deliberate fire that broke out around 02:00 local time.

“A piece of burning cotton went through the small barred window near the stairs. A witness saw someone flee from the cathedral,” he added.

The Police have opened an investigation into the incident, which has not resulted in material damage of consideration inside the premises.

The ashes of Tutu, who died on December 26 at the age of 90, were buried on January 2 in the Cathedral of Saint George. The building is not far from Parliament, which was burned down the same day as his burial.
