Poland begins building a permanent fence on its border with Belarus

MADRID, Jan. 24 (Royals Blue) –

Poland begins Tuesday to build a permanent fence on its border with Belarus, in the framework of the migration crisis in the region, as reported on Monday by the spokeswoman for the Polish Border Guard, Lieutenant Anna Michalska.

“According to the plan, this Tuesday the construction of the fence on the border with Belarus will begin,” Michalska told the Polish news agency PAP.

Michalska has detailed that the preparatory work for the construction of the fence “has been going on for some time.” The fence, which will have a total length of 186 kilometers and a height of more than five and a half meters, will be ready in June this year. The work, carried out by the Budimex company, will cost 644 million zlotys (more than 140.7 million euros).

The Polish authorities already installed a barbed wire fence on the border with Belarus at the height of the migration crisis.

Warsaw accuses the Belarusian government of promoting the migratory flow at the border as a retaliation measure for the sanctions imposed by the European Union against the president, Alexander Lukashenko, after the controversial elections in August 2020. Lukashenko denies this.
