Sega looks to buy Angry Birds developer Rovio for 1 billion – That’s Gaming

Developers and publishers of console games are beginning to see the potential for huge profits in the mobile gaming market, and more and more of them are entering the market, often in the form of acquisitions. Sega may well be the next company to take this leap, and it seems that this could happen via a major acquisition.

The Wall Street Journal claims in a report that Sega plans to acquire Rovio, the developer behind the Angry Birds franchise, in a deal worth up to $1 billion. According to the report, if all goes according to plan, the deal is expected to be finalized in the coming days.

Interestingly, Rovio has also confirmed that it is currently in talks with Sega about a possible deal. In a recent statement (via Reuters), the company said, “As part of its strategic review, Rovio Entertainment Corporation confirms that it is in talks with Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. Rovio and Sega will announce further information at an appropriate time.”

A number of companies in the console world have made similar acquisitions in recent years. EA bought Playdemic for $1.4 billion in 2021, while Take-Two Interactive completed its $12.7 billion acquisition of Zynga last year. Meanwhile, Microsoft has also said the mobile market is a key factor in its upcoming acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
