BOE has developed transparent MLED displays that outperform LG’s transparent OLEDs

Chinese display manufacturer BOE has come a long way in the last few years. From a small supplier of components for Chinese brands, the company has even landed contracts with Apple for iPhone screens, and now it’s announcing it’s entering a new market. Soon, we might see its new transparent MLED screens in stores everywhere, which are better performing than LG’s previously promised transparent OLEDs.

BOE’s transparent MLED screens could soon be hitting store windows

The specifications of the new MLED screens are impressive, as the company has managed through an efficient arrangement of circuits and LEDs to create screens with 65% transparency. This means that, on average, across the entire 16″ screen, 65% of the light from the back can penetrate the other side. And this is achieved with a brightness of 1,000 nits and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. In comparison, LG’s transparent OLED panels have only 45% transparency.

The display has QHD resolution, so it’s a high-resolution display for the 16″ diagonal. The company has signed up this screen for TUV Rheinland certification for comfort in use, suggesting that it is designed to emit as little blue light as possible and decrease the eye-weary “flicker” effect. Of course, this certification is less important for an advertising screen you only see in passing in a shop window than for a screen you use for a few hours a day from a short distance.

What we don’t know yet is when we’ll see these transparent screens in use. The company hasn’t announced an official date for their availability. Most likely, however, they will be sold to advertising companies, who will develop turnkey solutions for stores to buy and install in their locations.
