Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe calls Russia a “terrorist regime”

Follow live the latest news on the war in Ukraine.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has described the current regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin as “terrorist”.

“The Assembly has called on the member states of the Council of Europe to declare the current Russian regime as ‘terrorist,'” reads the PACE communiqué.

PACE has “strongly” condemned Russia’s attempted annexation of four Ukrainian regions, claiming that the “so-called referendums” are “null and void and without legal and political effect.”

Also, in a unanimously adopted resolution the parliamentarians have called for a court to try Moscow.

“The parliamentarians called for a ‘comprehensive system’ to hold the Russian Federation and its leaders accountable for their aggression and violations of Human Rights and humanitarian law, including the prompt establishment of an ad hoc tribunal to prosecute crimes of aggression,” the missive adds.

“Russia’s growing threats of nuclear war are incompatible with the responsibilities of a nuclear power that has a permanent seat on the Council,” the parliamentarians criticized.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has welcomed the Assembly’s decision, “We have a powerful response from PACE, which is the first international organization to designate the current regime in Russia as terrorist.”

“It is very important that this is a political signal, a signal to all states, both the members of the Council of Europe and the rest of the states of the world. There is nothing to talk about with this terrorist group, which took over Russia and unleashed the most atrocious war in Europe in 80 years,” the Ukrainian leader said.

Thus, Zelenski has asserted that “terror must be answered with force at all levels: on the battlefield, with sanctions and with laws.”

The leader also referred to the proposal to create a special tribunal for Moscow to take responsibility for the war and thanked the institution for the measures made public.

“I am grateful to all our partners in the Council of Europe who work for justice for Ukraine and for our entire continent,” he said, before thanking the Ukrainian delegation of PACE “for a really effective work.”
