The president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, has declared this Monday a state of calamity in the Central American country due to the effects of the passage of storm ‘Julia’.
“In the Council of Ministers we have decided to declare a state of calamity for 30 days to implement urgent measures to safeguard the lives of Guatemalans in the face of the scourge of cyclone ‘Julia’ in the country,” said Giammattei in a publication on his account on the social network Twitter.
“It should be noted that the damage being caused by ‘Julia’ throughout Central America, and especially in Guatemala, is copious,” explained the president.
The country’s leader has pointed out that damage has already occurred in the Guatemalan territory, despite the fact that more heavy rains are expected. “We have people buried, we already have seven bridges affected, damaged roads, people without power …”, Giammattei has listed in a video posted on his networks.
“The biggest effects are going to happen in the course of today,” he warned, before calling for precautions because of the high probability of recording severe flooding on the banks of the country’s rivers.
The state of calamity allows, for the next 30 days, the Executive to implement urgent measures, among which direct purchases for the emergency.
