An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale has shaken eastern Papua New Guinea on Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency have reported.
The earthquake was recorded at 06.47 local time (23.47 Spanish peninsular time), at a depth of 116 kilometers.
In the early hours of the previous morning, two earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 and 5.8 were felt in the Indonesian province of Papua, on the same island. These earthquakes were recorded at a depth of 19 and 15 kilometers respectively.
Papua New Guinea is located in the eastern half of the island of New Guinea.
