Scholz to meet Trudeau to intensify energy cooperation with Canada

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Canada to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with the aim of intensifying energy cooperation between the two nations in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a first stop, Scholz, accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Climate Protection, Robert Habeck, will meet with Trudeau in Montreal to discuss political, economic and military support to Ukraine in the framework of the Russian invasion, as well as relations with China or measures to deal with the energy crisis.

Afterwards, the German Chancellor will attend an economic conference together with a delegation of businessmen. On his last stop, he will visit Stephenville, Newfoundland, to learn about the development of hydrogen technologies and supply chains. The two nations are expected to sign an agreement in this area.

“The chancellor’s visit to Canada is an important signal for the German economy, which is closely interconnected on an international level,” said the president of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), Peter Adrian.

In this regard, he has pointed out that German foreign trade is facing major challenges due to problems in supply chains and the reorganization of sales markets and sources of supply because of the war in Ukraine.
