Greece’s president calls for thorough investigation into alleged spying case against opposition leader

The president of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, has called Tuesday for a thorough investigation into the alleged case of espionage against opposition leader Nikos Androulakis, who heads the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) party and who detected an attempt to install the Predator ‘software’ on his cell phone.

The head of state, who has stressed that the level of transparency in state affairs reveals the quality of democracies, has urged to open inquiries and take measures to “improve the functioning of the National Intelligence Service.”

Sakellaropoulou, who chaired the Association of Judicial Officers of the Council of State, has pointed out that any “exception to the privacy law on national security grounds “must be interpreted in accordance with the established principles of proportionality.”

Thus, he has seconded the words of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who has insisted that he was not aware of the alleged spying and described the case as “something that should not have happened.”
