Canada expands sanctions package on Russia in response to Ukraine invasion

The Government of Canada on Friday expanded its sanctions against Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine, unleashed on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the inclusion of eight sectors in its package of restrictions.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry has published a series of amendments to the sanctions package affecting metal manufacturing; fabricated metal products, with the exception of machinery and equipment; computers, electronic and optical products; electrical equipment; machinery and equipment not classified in other sectors; motor vehicles; transportation equipment; and overland transportation and pipelines.

“It is prohibited for any person in Canada and any Canadian outside Canada to give Russia or any person in Russia a referred service (…) in connection with one of the specified industries,” it has stressed in a brief statement on its website.

In response, sources at the Russian Embassy in Canada has said that these sanctions are “totally groundless and counterproductive,” Russian news agency TASS has reported. “As we have repeatedly warned, all economic sanctions are double-edged and will have an impact on Canada,” they have zanelled.
