Xiaomi 12S series officially unveiled for the Chinese market

Xiaomi has launched the new Xiaomi 12S series, developed in partnership with Leica. The new series consisting of Xiaomi 12S, 12S Pro and 12S Ultra models brings to the forefront image processing systems jointly developed by Xiaomi and Leica.

The base model, the Xiaomi 12S, comes with a 6.28-inch diagonal FHD+ OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. The 12S Pro model increases the display diagonal to 6.73 inches, using a Samsung E5 series OLED panel with 2K (WQHD) resolution and variable refresh rate (between 1 and 120Hz), enabled by using LTPO technology. Like the 12 Pro model already released for the European market, we find HDR10+ and Dolby Vision certifications, guaranteeing the best possible experience when watching video content.

The Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro use a 1/1.28″ Sony IMX707 element as their main photo sensor, capable of emulating 2.44μm pixels by applying pixel binning. Image quality is further optimized using Xiaomi AI Image Solution and Xiaomi ProFocus algorithms. The phones also implement the all-scene snapshot function to capture important moments more easily. Another new feature is the burst capture mode, capable of taking pictures at 30 frames per second.

All phones have built-in 10-bit RAW format calibrated by Adobe Labs, with colour correction metadata built into the files. When using Adobe Lightroom to open photos taken with the Xiaomi 12S series, Adobe Camera RAW software will automatically optimize them based on the metadata, giving professional photographers a head start for editing.

Beyond the use of cameras made in collaboration with Leica specialists, the main strength for the new Xiaomi 12S series is the presence of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, slightly faster and more efficient with battery usage than its debut version. By far the biggest performance leap is offered by the 12S Pro model, which drops the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 solution.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the first flagship model to come equipped with two proprietary Xiaomi Surge chips, namely the Xiaomi Surge P1 chip for fast charging and the Xiaomi Surge G1 chip for battery management. The setup brings improvements in charging and battery as well as overall user experience.

The 12S Ultra supports fast charging via USB-C at 67W, wireless charging at 50W, and reverse charging at 10W. At the core of the Xiaomi Surge Battery Management System is a single-cell 4,860mAh battery and the Xiaomi Surge P1 fast charging chip, which supports up to 16A output current with 96.8% conversion efficiency. In addition, the Xiaomi Surge G1 chip brings a number of algorithms that are designed to ensure safe operation, monitor discharge and accurately indicate battery life. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra also includes adaptive charging function, limiting the maximum charge based on usage pattern, reducing battery wear by up to 25%.

The 12S Pro is equipped with the Xiaomi Surge P1 fast charging chip, features wired charging at 120W, wireless charging at 50W, and a single-cell 4,600mAh battery, while the Xiaomi 12S’s 4,500mAh battery charges wired at 67W and wireless at 50W.

The new Xiaomi 12S series is only available in store offerings with delivery in China, with the manufacturer not giving a timeframe for the global launch just yet.
