X is going to charge users $1 –

It wasn’t too long ago that Elon Musk had the idea of charging every user on his platform X (formerly Twitter). Now we are starting to see this concept in action.

In New Zealand and the Philippines, new users signing up to X must pay a $1 annual fee to create their account. Paying this fee allows them to post, repost and reply to messages. It is still free to create “read-only” accounts if you really just want to lurk on Twitter.

According to Musk and X-support this is the best way to combat bots on the platform and is not a move to generate more revenue. The fee does not apply to people with pre-existing accounts, but many still see it as a warning sign of things to come.
