Watch LIVE the iPhone 14 “Far Out” launch event. VIDEO

Today, September 7, at 20:00 CET, Apple’s “Far Out” launch event takes place, where we expect to see the new iPhone 14 range of mobile devices. While there are sure to be other surprises, the phones are sure to be the ones that catch everyone’s attention. Despite Apple trying as much as possible to keep the details of these devices secret, most of the information about them has already hit the internet, so we mostly know what to expect. You can watch the launch live right from the player above. Here’s what we think we’ll see at the event:

iPhone 14 launch event will introduce new model and design upgrades

The iPhone 14 series will definitely debut at the event. It will again consist of four new models, but one major change is expected. Instead of the iPhone 14 Mini, Apple would introduce a new iPhone 14 Plus (or Max?) model. It would feature a larger 6.7″ screen, just like the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but at 60 Hz, not 120 Hz. Unfortunately, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus models are not expected to come with significant hardware upgrades. They could be nearly identical in performance to last year’s iPhone 13 models, featuring the same Apple A15 chipset and camera systems.

The iPhone 14 Pro will instead be significantly changed design-wise, as they will be the first models without a “notch” since the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. The notch would be replaced with a dual cutout, for the camera and Face ID sensors, and a new processor, the Apple A16 Bionic, appears inside. Also, the camera system on the iPhone 14 Pro could be significantly changed, with a 48-megapixel main sensor for the first time. As a result, the camera module will again be larger than last generation’s, so compatibility with older cases won’t be possible.

Prices of the new iPhone models could also increase. In the absence of the Mini model, the iPhone 14 could start at US$799, the price at which the “standard” iPhone 13 came last year. The iPhone 14 Plus/Max model could then come in at $899 US, while the Pro variants would also increase $100 in price over the previous generation.

The iPhone 14 Pro, with a 6.1″ screen, is expected to start at $1,099 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max from $1,199. The difference from last year, however, would be the lack of a 128 GB model, the minimum being 256 GB. Thus, the 256 GB and larger models won’t be more expensive than last year’s variants with the same capacity. However, the lack of cheaper base models will lead to an increase in the average selling price of iPhones in 2022.

Apple Watch Series 8 will introduce a new “Pro” watch

The Apple Watch will get an iterative upgrade this year, according to information already available. Thus, we expect a largely identical processor and unchanged sensors. There is the possibility of a skin temperature sensor being integrated, but this has not yet been confirmed with certainty by any “unofficial” source. The design will remain the same as last year, as the Series 7 was the first change after three almost identical models (Series 4/5/6). We probably won’t see another design change until Series 10.

New to the watch case could be the Series 8 Pro, an even larger 49mm watch (compared to 41/45mm on the Series 7/8). It could be equipped with a larger battery and will introduce a new physical button on the left side. This watch model could offer longer battery life and features dedicated to those who are passionate about outdoor activities.

Apple may be saving a few surprises for the end of the event, but it certainly won’t announce everything today. A new launch event for the iPad 10 and iPad Pro 2022 tablets is expected in October, probably alongside the new MacBook Pros with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors.
