The US shows its concern over the murder of journalists in Mexico and calls for “accountability”

López Obrador tells Blinken that “he is not well informed”

MADRID, 23 (EUROPE PRESS)

The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, has expressed his concern about the “high number” of journalists murdered in Mexico so far this year, while calling for “accountability” in these crimes.

In a message published through his account on the social network Twitter, Blinken has also been concerned about the threats that these professionals face in the North American country and has asked for “protection” for them. “My heart goes out to the loved ones of those who gave their lives for the truth”, he has riveted him.

Senators Marco Rubio and Tim Kaine, Republican and Democrat, respectively, have written to Blinken this month to express their concern about the murder of journalists in Mexico and denounce the “inaction” of the Mexican government.

Thus, they asked the United States to urge the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to improve the protection of these professionals and lamented that the president “continues to criticize journalists who criticize his government instead of defending freedom of expression,” according to the Mexican newspaper ‘Milenio’ has recalled.

In this context, López Obrador has asked Blinken “to be informed”, since his comments on the situation of journalists in the country “are not true” and has taken the opportunity to demand that Washington “do not act in an interfering manner” because ” Mexico is not an American colony.”

In the opinion of the Mexican president, Blinken is misinformed or, otherwise, “he would be acting in bad faith.” “Not what he is maintaining is not true, it is very unfortunate that there are murders of journalists (…) in all cases he is acting”, he has indicated. In addition, he has maintained that in this type of crime “there is no impunity”, the newspaper ‘El Universal’ has collected.

The president has lashed out at journalists in recent weeks as part of his daily press conference. One of them is Carlos Loret de Mola, who published a report on the luxurious life of his son.

Last week, the López Obrador Administration presented a report on the investigations into the murders of journalists and expressed its respect for those who exercise the profession. At the same time, he regretted that the murders of journalists are being used to foment a media campaign against his government.

So far in 2022, six journalists have been murdered in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world to practice the profession.
