The Russian newspaper ‘Novaya Gazeta’, one of the main information banners critical of the Kremlin, announced on Monday that it will paralyze its activities until the military offensive on Ukraine has ended, after receiving a new notice from the authorities.

The direction of the media has confirmed on the website that the regulatory body, Roskomnadzor, has issued another warning, so they will stop publishing both on the Internet and in print until the offensive has ended, therefore without a date.

‘Novaya Gazeta’ uses, in fact, the term “special operation”, the same term used by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to announce the start of the invasion on February 24. Moscow has asked the media to stick to this language if they do not want to be fined or even cancelled.

The newspaper was already maintaining limited coverage of the war in Ukraine, after publicly acknowledging that it had to avoid certain content so as not to risk closure following the tightening of censorship promoted by the Kremlin.

Journalist Denis Muratov, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2021 and founder of ‘Novaya Gazeta’, announced last week that he would donate the medal he received in Oslo to help Ukrainian refugees, in a symbolic gesture with which he intends to put the spotlight in the millions of people displaced by the military offensive launched by Russia.
