The president of the Parliament of Ivory Coast, Amadou Soumahoro, dies

The president of the Ivory Coast Parliament, Amadou Soumahoro, died this Saturday at the age of 68 in the Ivorian city of Abidjan, where he was convalescing from cancer, the country’s Presidency reported in a statement.

“My countrymen, I am deeply saddened to announce the death, this Saturday, May 7, 2022, of the president of the National Assembly (…) I pay tribute to a great statesman whose commitment and political journey marked our country,” he said. Soumahoro has presided over the Ivorian Lower House since March 7, 2019, thus becoming the seventh president of his country’s Parliament.

In recent months he had been absent from his post to be treated first in France, and then in Turkey, where after a year of treatment he hoped to preside over a new parliamentary session last April, although his health did not allow it. .
