The Microsoft Excel World Championship to be held in Las Vegas

The Microsoft Excel World Championship 2024the largest esports event of Microsoft Excel, an office spreadsheet software, will take place from Dec. 3-4 in Las Vegas. The event, which features a $60,000 prize pool, will be held at the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas and will feature competitors from around the world.

Known for being a staple of office work around the world, Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet editing software that is part of the Microsoft Office suite of programs. The program was launched in 1987 and is used by millions of people on a daily basis. In addition to being a well-known piece of office software, Excel’s capabilities have made it an unlikely esports title.

The Financial Modeling World Cupthe organization that created the Excel World Championship, has created a set of competitive rules for Excel enthusiasts that serve to showcase quick thinking and mechanical skills. The 2024 season has had a total of 10 online qualification and playoff rounds that will culminate at the HyperX Arena, known for hosting numerous esports and video game events in the past. A total of 40 players will compete over the two-day event.

The event was first held in 2021 as FMWC Open and was renamed MS Excel World Championship in 2023. The organizers also host a collegiate event called the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge.

According to its organizers, the event will “challenge finalists with tasks designed to assess their knowledge in leveraging Excel techniques to solve complex and out-of-the-ordinary scenarios.” Contestants will be asked to solve challenges and score based on their complexity. These range from financial modeling to data modeling to strategic tasks, most involving large data sets that must be quickly understood and analyzed.
