Steam gets overhaul for in-game overlay – That’s Gaming

Steam has unveiled a major update for the Steam PC desktop client. Currently available through the Steam Client Beta, the update brings new features and general improvements to Steam’s desktop experience.

While most of the improvements are mainly under the hood, the entire Steam desktop client has seen minor changes everywhere, including an updated look for various buttons, menus and fonts in the Steam UI.

The most noticeable change to Steam is the new in-game overlay. The overlay now has an entirely new UI that revolves around a new toolbar that allows you to access options such as friends chat, achievement progress and tutorials.

The new in-game overlay also brings with it a new feature: the ability to take notes while playing games. These notes are stored on a per-game basis and players can create multiple notes for each game. The notes are also available in offline mode. Players can also pin windows from the overlay so that they always appear in-game, including their notes.

Other changes include an update to Steam’s notifications and how the screenshot manager works. Much of the update deals with how Steam handles updates between the Steam desktop client, Big Picture Mode and Steam Deck.
