Soon, you’ll also be able to answer WhatsApp calls directly from your smartwatch

WhatsApp continues to evolve into a universal messaging platform, with communications now being able to be picked up on less common devices such as Wear OS 3 smartwatches.

Meta’s plan is to give users every possible means to communicate with friends or family, regardless of the type of device used.

Returning to Wear OS 3, Google’s confirmed support covers the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 series as well. Thus, starting with the WhatsApp beta versions for Android 2.22.19.11, new functionality is guaranteed, with users able to reply to messages and even take voice calls, directly from the app on the Galaxy Watch. WhatsApp calls received in this way will be differentiated by the WhatsApp logo.

The change has been confirmed on the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 4, but the experience should be similar on other Wear OS 3 smartwatches, such as the Mont Blanc Summit 3 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Interestingly, WhatsApp doesn’t offer a native Wear OS app, the announced change directly targets WearOS firmware.

To take advantage of the new functionality requires at least upgrading to the latest version of WearOS, i.e. subscribing to the beta update channel offered by Google, with access to yet-to-be officially announced software releases.
